This is the current situation affecting Verbania Province, and it has forced the Ticino Park to raise the alarm. \u201cThe situation is so serious, that, at the Becca Bridge, where the river enters the Po, the level is 3 metres below the hydrometric zero,\u201d Luigi Duse, the vice-chairman of the Park, explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE DATA<\/strong> \u2013 The level of water in Lake Maggiore continues to fall; every second, 250 m<sup>3<\/sup> of water comes out of the Miorina Dam, in Sesto Calende, but at the same time, the rivers bring only 170 m<sup>3<\/sup> into the basin. <strong>In practice, Verbania Province is losing 80,000 litres of water every second<\/strong>. But most of the water coming into the river goes into the canals: the Naviglio has to keep the water high in Darsena, Milan; the Villoresi has to bring 600 litres of water per second to Expo; and the irrigation of the fields is at record levels. \u201c<strong>Under these conditions, only 25 m<sup>3<\/sup> is left in the Ticino<\/strong>,\u201d <strong>Duse explained<\/strong>, \u201c<strong>and the whole ecosystem is at risk<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE WARNING<\/strong> \u2013 And so, the Ticino Park has called upon the Institutional Technical Committee of the Po Basin Authority immediately to set the increase in the maximum regulation level of Lake Maggiore over the summer period to one metre fifty above the hydrometric zero. \u201c<strong>We\u2019ve been saying the level has to be raised, for a year<\/strong>,\u201d he continued, \u201c<strong>and unfortunately, the weather forecasts are proving us right<\/strong>.\u201d With the warning, \u201cNo one can say they didn\u2019t know,\u201d so, everyone \u201cmust accept their responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE MINIMUM ESSENTIAL FLOW<\/strong> \u2013 This matter has been dragging on since last summer, <strong>when the Environment Ministry decided to interrupt testing<\/strong>, which, in the summer, raised the level of Lake Maggiore by half a metre, to combat the period of drought. The matter is now under examination by the Water Court in Rome, but the next hearing will not be before September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE ALARM<\/strong> \u2013 Without new water flows (read \u201crain\u201d), the level of the lake will continue to fall, and the problems will increase. \u201cBy our calculations, <strong>the level of the lake will be too low<\/strong> in about ten days\u2019 time,\u201d Duse concluded, \u201cand this will affect the whole basin, putting farmers, power stations and even the Expo site at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ticino Park has raised the alarm. \u201cThe river is three metres below the hydrometric zero.\u201d And if the rains do not come, canals, electric power stations and the Expo site will be without water.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1026,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[44],"tags":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.1 -
