Twenty one teams in the Insubria GP
Basso’s Liquigas, and Evans’ and Santambrogio’s BMC lead the group of teams competing on 27 February. Among the other teams, there are the Footon-Servetto, managed by Zanini and Nardello, and the team of reigning champion, Ginanni, Androni.
The S.C. Binda team and the Lugano Sailing Club have made the list of teams taking part in the second Insubria Grand Prix official. There are going to be no fewer than twenty one teams, who will battle it out on the over 180-km course between Campione d’Italia and Pieve Vergonte, led by Ivan Basso’s Liquigas-Doimo team, and by the recently formed BMC team, of reigning world champion Cadel Evans, and Mauro Santambrogio, who won the last Three Valleys race. The Varese and Australian cyclists are the two superstars in the race, which was won last year by Francesco Ginanni (see photo), who will be another one to keep an eye on, not to mention his Androni-Diquigiovanni team, which is managed by Gianni Savio and sponsored by the industrialist, Mario Androni.
The list of teams is full and interesting; among the teams of the Pro Tour, there will be the newly created Sky, Saronni’s Lampre-Farnese, the French AG2R
Other Italian teams present at the start in Campione d’Italia will include the De Rosa-Stac Plastic, the Colnago-CSF, the Flaminia-Bossini, the Carmiooro-NGC and the ISD Neri. The foreign teams that have confirmed their participation include the Cofidis, the Voralberg-Corratec, the Adria Mobil, the PSK Whirlpool, the Zheroquattro Radenska, the Tusnad, the Price-Custom Bikes and the Atlas Personal.
The Insubria race will be officially presented next Monday, 8 February, in the Galleria Civica in Campione d’Italia. On this occasion, all of the details of the competition, which has a completely different route from that of last year, will be revealed. “This year, we have had great support from the city of Campione d’Italia and from the Cheula Fan Club, who have worked hard to involve sponsors and organisations in Pieve Vergonte and in Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province,” explained the owner of the “Binda” team, Renzo Oldani. “We have managed to choose a course that crosses the whole region of Insubria, the provinces of Como, Varese, Novara and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, as well as the Canton Ticino.”
