Two hours from Bellinzona, Malpensa is even closer

Today, the 14 new connections to and from the airport have started running. Stops also in Luino and Gallarate.

With the new train timetable, which comes into effect today, Malpensa is even closer. From early morning until evening (every two hours), the “Flirt” trains of the rail company TILO, connect the Sopraceneri area of the Canton Ticino, Luino and Gallarate to the international airport.

This morning the special train to Luino, which, for the occasion, was named the “Lombardy”, set off from Bellinzona station, with the State Councillor Marco Borradori and the President of the Canton Ticino council, Gianni Guidicelli on board. The Swiss visitors were welcomed by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Mobility for Lombardy Region, Raffaele Cattaneo and the Mayor of Luino, Andrea Pellicini, who, together with the TILO chairman, Michele Molina, the regional director and coordinator of the Swiss rail company FFS, Roberto Tulipani, and many mayors and representatives of the region, officially decreed the start of the 14 daily connections to and from Milan Malpensa International Airport.

“We are welcoming a beautiful, modern train that will improve the connections an travelling conditions of commuters in Lombardy and Canton Ticino,” Cattaneo said. “By uniting the forces of our two countries, we’ve been able to introduce these new connections, on particularly beautiful, high quality Flirt trains. This is an important day that marks another step in the collaboration between Ticino and Lombardy, which that must travel as fast as a train, to benefit everyone.”

Marco Borradori also expressed his satisfaction. “I’m very pleased with the work done over these months and, for Canton Ticino, it is very important to be able to count on Lombardy Region,” he said. “Today, we have taken an essential step in the development of the Italian – Swiss territory, also from the point of view of tourism.”

It was an important day also for the city of Luino. “Today, Luino is escaping its historical isolation, and so, I have to thank Councillor Cattaneo and State Councillor Borradori. With their work, they have given dignity to the travellers on this route,” said Pellicini. “This is an important day for politics, as a concrete response has been given to the needs of the territory; thanks to these magnificent trains, we will be able to reach Malpensa in one hour.”

The journey time from Bellinzona to Malpensa is 2 hours and 15 minutes. From Luino, it is 1 hour and 18 minutes, and from Gallarate, 22 minutes. The service on the S30 line, which is managed in Italy by the rail company Trenord, is provided by modern trains, TILO’s Flirt trains, which have 4 carriages, with 184 seats, air-conditioning, an audiovisual system for onboard information, video surveillance and lowered access. The direct connection to Malpensa travels along Busto Arsizio’s "X link", which has been built thanks to a partnership between the companies RFI and Ferrovienord, the network and infrastructure company of the FNM Group, as part of the work to enhance the railway infrastructure of the so-called "Gronda Nord" (Novara – Busto – Castellanza – Saronno – Seregno). On the Italian side, the new partnership provided the opportunity to reorganise all services between Milan, Gallarate and Luino, offering, in particular, a new morning connection to Luino for cross-border workers; the times of the service to and from Switzerland have been extended (today until about 7 p.m., tomorrow, until about 9 p.m.), the dead times in the timetable, which existed both in Switzerland and in Italy, have been filled, the timetable is easier to remember for all stops on the Luino – Gallarate – Milan route, and there is a new departure from Milan, the final evening run (from Porta Garibaldi Station, in Milan, at 10.29 p.m.).
