Six hundred foreigners more in ten years
The regional population has increased from 9 to 9.7 million inhabitants. The increase is based almost on immigrants, while Italian citizens are only 43 thousand more than 2001
In 10 years, foreign Lombardy population increased by 196% and the overall Lombardy population passed from 9 million in 2001 to 9.7 million in 2011. From 2001 to 2011, immigrant population passed from 350 thousand units to 950 thousand units, with an increase by 600 thousand people, equal to 196%. The figure comes out from the 15th ISTAT census. Immigrants who took the census are 1/4 of the nationwide amount, on a global Lombardy population of 9.7 million people (+7.4%). Therefore, the increase of Lombardy population is almost exclusively based on foreigners, while Italian citizenship inhabitants are only 43 thousand more. The foreign residents on regional territory are men 48.5%, women 51.5%. 22.8% are between 0 and 14 years old, 47.3% are between 15 and 39 years old, 27.9% are between 40 and 64 years old, while 2% are more than 65 years old. During inter-census decade, Italian citizenship population only increased by 43,866 units (+0.5%). In Milan, where 34% of Lombardy immigrants reside, the foreign population increased by 236 thousand people. The greatest foreigners’ density is registered in Brescia (125 immigrants every 1000 people). The greatest increase in foreign population is in Pavia (+331%) and Lodi (+323%), the minor increase is in Milan (+148%) and Varese (+182%). As far as municipalities are concerned, Lombardy has two national records: Pavia municipality Rocca de’ Giorgi registers the highest percentage of foreigners on the total amount of people who were taken the census (36.7%) and Brescia municipality, among the big Italian municipalities, holds the highest percentage of foreigners every 1,000 residents (166.1 ‰).
From 2001 up to today, the population has increased in 1,223 Lombardy municipalities (79.3%). The highest increase in absolute terms is in Lissone (+7,770 units) and Desio (+5,328), in relative terms in Rognano, province of Pavia, whose population passes from 194 to 619 individuals (+219.1%). Vice versa, Milan is the municipality that loses the highest number of residents (-14,088 units) and Veddasca, province of Varese, registers the highest negative percentage variation (- 27.7%). Lombardy resident population is distributed for 22.0% over municipalities with a demographic largeness that is no more than 5 thousand inhabitants, for 36.9% in municipalities included in the intermediate class from 5,001 to 20,000 inhabitants, for 41.1% in the remaining class of municipalities with more than 20 thousand inhabitants.
