Armed commando assaults two armoured vehicles: a ten-million-euro heist
The gang obstructed the route by placing two trucks in the way. Afterwards, they forced the men in the vehicle to hand over the money, covering their getaway by scattering nails on the highway
This morning, around 7 am, an armed robbery, which could be compared to a real military assault, attacked two armoured vehicles on the motorway. Many drivers panicked while experiencing the action, the firing of hundreds of shots at an eye level, luckily no one was wounded and the car chase. They got away with a ten-million-euro loot. The motorway was immediately closed in both directions and it was only reopened after 14.30, once the police had finished the inspection.
The armed gang ambushed the two armoured vehicles on the A9 between Turate and Saronno. The gang obstructed the route by placing two trucks in the way, the first in front of the two armoured vehicles and the other behind them. One of the two vehicles was set on fire. Afterwards, the gang scattered three-pointed nails on the motorway to obstruct the car chasing.
It is said that the criminals, then, forced the men of the two armoured vehicles to get off after simulating a fire with a smoke bomb and they ordered them to hand over the money threatening them with fire arms. At least, fifty cartridge cases belonging to a long war weapons, probably Kalashnikov, were found on the spot. The criminals, more or less ten, got away aboard three cars taking secondary roads: they left the motorway using the narrow passages created especially by the criminals themselves. The two assaulted vehicles belong to Battistolli in Vincenza, one of the biggest companies in the industry, and it is investigating what happened. The robbed vehicle had also several gold bars on board (the company declares that the load was heterogeneous, coming from supermarkets and banks).
The security, usually composed by three people per vehicle, were questioned by the squad of Como which is in charge of the investigation. Three of the different cars used to run away were abandoned in a farmstead not far from Turate: two Alfa Romeos and one Audi.
Patrols and police blocks have been set up in a large area to try to track down the criminals responsible for the robbery.
