The League has won in Lugano. Disappeared Giuliano Bignasca got 9000 votes.

A historic turning point in the most important town in the canton. The party got 35% of the votes, and obtained a third councillor.

The success of the Ticino League continues. With the council elections, which took place on Sunday 14 April, the party has won its third seat (out of 7) on the city council, getting a total of 35.5% of the votes, 7% more than in 2008. The FDP, the main political opponent, which was previously the leading party, got 33.2%.

The awaited confrontation between Marco Borradori (of the League, see photo) and the outgoing mayor, Giorgio Giudici (FDP) ended with a victory for the League’s former State councillor, who got no fewer than 14,212 votes, against Giudici’s 12,725.

It is important also to mention the outcome of the decision, which was greatly criticised by the other parties, to keep the League’s founder, Giuliano Bignasca, who died last month, on the list. The historic leader got 9001 votes, making a great contribution to the final result.

The other parties were a long way behind, with the SP with 14,1%, and the CVP with 13,3%. Both parties, however, keep one city councillor each. And so, it is Marco Borradori, Lorenzo Quadri and Michele Foletti (who replaced the late Bignasca) of the Ticino League, Giorgio Giudici and Giovanna Masoni Brenni of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland, Cristina Zanini Barzaghi of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland and Angelo Jelmini of the Christian Democratic People’s Party of Switzerland who have been elected.

On the spur of the moment, the outgoing mayor, Giorgio Giudici, said to the Swiss TV channel RSI, “To be honest, we didn’t take it too seriously.” And on his future, he added, “Before I accept or refuse the job, I need time to talk with my party and my family. I’ll decide by tomorrow.”

In Mendrisio, the CVP came top (40.27%), followed by the FDP (30.24%), the left-wing party, “Insieme a Sinistra” (13%), the Ticino League-SVP-Independents (11.48%), and the Green Party of Switzerland (5.01%).  The city council will have 3 representatives  of the CVP (the outgoing mayor, Carlo Croci, with Rossi and Calderari), 2 representatives of the FDP (Peternier and Maffi), 1 representative of “Insieme a Sinistra” (Comi) and 1 representative of the Ticino League (Robbiani). On the city council, the CVP and GG have 37.9% of the votes, followed by the FDP (30.98%), “Insieme a Sinistra” (14.08%), the Ticino League-SVP-Independent coalition (11.7%) and the Green Party (5.35%).

In Terre di Pedemonte, the town council will have 2 representatives of the list LISA (Lista Libertà, solidarietà e ambiente – Liberty, Solidarity and Environment) 1 representative of the Ticino League-SVP-Independent coalition, 1 representative of the FDP and 1 representative of the CVP. The city council will be made up of 8 councilmen from LISA and the FDP, 5 from the Ticino League-SVP-Independent coalition and 4 councilmen from the CVP.
