Any meals not consumed in the kindergartens will be sent to the soup kitchen

The number of meals per day at the Betania soup kitchen has risen to 50. The administration has signed an agreement to collect any meals non consumed in two kindergartens. “A request has also been made to supermarkets, for any products that are close to their expiry date.”

Demand at the soup kitchen is increasing, and the local council has signed an agreement with the town’s school canteens. The project is named “Good Samaritan”, and has been promoted by the council, by the social services and education departments, to be precise, along with volunteers of the Betania and Pellegrini soup kitchens. “Basically the Betania soup kitchen, which provides meals in two shifts, saw an increase in the number of users, who are now up to 50 a day,” explained the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for social services, Valeria Valioni. “The agreement we’ve signed with the Pellegrini soup kitchen is for an additional 10 meals, and the volunteers from the Betania soup kitchen will go every day to the town’s school canteens, to collect any meals not consumed, that are still packaged, which would otherwise be thrown away an hour after they were prepared.”

The meals will be collected from the kindergartens of San Giovanni Bosto and Vittorino da Feltre.

“In this way, we will continue to support the Betania soup kitchen, which is doing a difficult job,” Valioni added. “We also think we’re giving a virtuous signal to the children, by not wasting what’s not used.”

The “Good Samaritan” project also includes a second phase. ”We’re also trying to involve the ethical purchasing groups, who’ve said they’re willing to work on this project,” the Deputy Mayor concluded. “We’ve also made a request to the commercial sector, especially to supermarkets in the area, to obtain any products they have that are about to expire that have not been sold, that could be used in the Betania soup kitchen.”
