Fifty eight full-time postmen and women are coming. Mayors rejoice
The agreement signed by all of the trade unions in Lombardy and the Post Office, resolves the problem, at least in part. The contract for postmen and women will go from part-time to full-time. “A success,” says the leader of the protest, Domenico Gioia.
The long story of disruptions linked to postal deliveries, appears now to have reached an important turning point. On Thursday 20 March, an agreement was signed, between the trade unions, CGIL, CISL, UIL Poste, Consal, FAILP-CISAL and UGL Comunicazioni, and the Post Office for all of the 339 part-time postmen and women currently employed in Lombardy to become full-time. This is good news for the people of Varese, who have had to put up with disruptions of every kind, also because 58 of the over 300 postmen and women are destined for Varese Province. The postmen and women employed permanently, under vertical part-time conditions, will become full-time on 1 April 2014, and will be introduced into the company in the delivery centres where there is availability, and by province.
“This is an important step in the right direction,” said the Mayor of Brebbia, Domenico Gioia. “We spoke about it this morning, Saturday 22 March, during the meeting with the mayors that have joined the protest movement. We met to explain the outcome of the meeting that we had with Prefect Zanzi, and with the managers of Poste Italiane. This morning, the MPs Angelo Senaldi and Maria Chiara Gadda, and the senators Erica D’Adda and Stefano Candiani, were also present.
“The agreement signed with all of the postal trade unions is good news because it means that the Post Office has acknowledged our observations and is respecting the agreements made. At this point, we can only wait, although we remain watchful.
“We have no intention of dropping our guard,” Mayor Gioia explained. “Our meetings, those that led to the collection of 6300 signatures, are going to continue. It’ll be a way of making Poste Italiane understand that we are monitoring the situation and that if it doesn’t improve, we will look at other measures. Of course, this is also true for the private operators who work in the province: they too have often created inconvenience, with disruptions of various kinds. Their commitment to improving postal deliveries must be clear, and the problem must be resolved quickly.”
