30 km/h ordinance remains in force. “We need it; we’ll make that clear”

With the good weather, the pollutants are on the increase again, and the council has decided to keep the speed limit in force until 15 March. “Those who are asking for it to be withdrawn haven’t understood why we need it.”

The anti-pollution ordinance is staying in force. The 30 km/h speed limit throughout the province will stay in force until 15 March, as was initially stipulated by the document. This was decided during the majority meeting held on Wednesday evening, after they had seen the new PM10 levels, which had already gone back above the level of alarm, in Saronno and throughout the province.

The decision by Saronno town council to limit the presence of fine particles, after record levels had been reached, well above the level of alarm, led to a number of disputes, and even attracted the attention of the national news. After the rain, last week, the limits fell, and the representatives of the Centre-Left majority met on Wednesday evening to decide whether to withdraw the measure, or to keep it.

“We decided that the ordinance should stay in force,” explained Councillor Giuseppe Campilongo. “It’s staying because what happened over the last few days was just an interlude. Even yesterday, Wednesday, the PM10 levels were back above the level of alarm. Furthermore, the weather forecast was favourable for an increase in the concentration of pollutants. We feel we have to do something to deal with the situation and keeping the ordinance in force is necessary. It’ll stay until the deadline of 15 March.”

On the matter of the protests that began on Facebook and in the town, with the Centre-Right collecting 1300 signatures asking for the measure to be withdrawn, Campilongo replied confidently. “We’ll certainly discuss it in the council; the people that signed the petition probably don’t have the right information that we wanted to give. We’ll take this opportunity to give out the right information, just as we will at the meeting with the experts planned for next 3 March, at the “Aldo Moro” School. We’ll try to explain, with better information, why we’ve kept this ordinance in place.”
