Somma Hospital: change

From next year, the hospital of Somma Lombardo will change its vocation.  The date and the allocation of funds for the transformation have been decided today, Friday 5th December by the regional committee.  It was the same President Roberto Maroni that explained the mode and objectives of what will become the first piece of the puzzle for the new sanity reforms: “The reform of the regional social and health system, beginning with the presentation of the ‘White Book’ in July, is being concluded. We are defining the text that I intend to bring to the approval of the Committee before Christmas, so before then we will have them the text of the reform of Lombard social and health system"

The first piece, therefore, will be “a POT” that will be created in some hospital structures identified last July: “The POTs," explained the regional city council member Mario Mantovani, "are a concrete answer to the problem of chronic diseases and they create that integration between hospital and territory, an advantage for the patient and their detailed necessities, that represents one of the pillars of the plan of modernisation of the health system of Lombardy". 

Last summer, the Lombard council had identified the hospitals of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Somma Lombardo, Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento – health centre of Via Farini and via Livigno and Soresina – AO Maggiore di Crema for the start of the project of Pot. With the resolution today officially starts this new organisational model, with an investment of over 800,000 Euros. Resources are allocated to the conversion of these principals, to be made within the first half of next year.

"With the POTs,” added Mantovani, “we will enhance the role of general practitioners, who are the first trench in the area in the field of health. Also, we will consolidate a model of health care that is always more efficient and that focuses on the patient and their needs, with facts and actions already anticipating the requirements of the ‘White Paper’. With this measure we will contribute also to avoid blockages in First Aid and in the departments of General Practice. These are the first four such experiences entering their implementation phase. Meanwhile, the ‘Evaluation Committee of territorial hospitals’ of Lombardy Region is working to identify other suitable projects to define and implement in the coming months. "

For Somma Lombardo, the project aims to provide services to chronic patients, identifying a diagnostic therapeutic agreed with the general practitioner and the coordination of access to the entire network of health services, social assistance and social, home care and outpatients, with coverage of the service from 8 am to 8 pm. The financial aid is 20,000 euro for the construction of the operations center.

"The Hospital,” reads a note, “welcomes the approval of the experimental project of the Territorial Hospital (POT) of Somma Lombardo: approval is proof that the proposed project, shared with the ASL Varese, corresponds to the lines of regional planning. As it is known, it will allow a new relationship between the structure of hospital stay, the structure of outpatient services, services in the territory of health and social care and primary care, which will be realised operationally in setting up a center within the hospital of Somma, with the task of coordinating the integration of all these services, aimed at critical chronic patients (patients with multiple diseases, unstable and that although not so serious to be hospitalised, due to their particular conditions tend to destabilise and have therefore the need of resorting to the emergency room for acute hospitalisation). The approved projects are of course not all equal, being in the testing phase different solutions. In our case, there will be no ‘transformation’ of the hospital of Somma: Itineraries of treatment will instead be tailored to a select group of seriously ill patients, for which there will also be performances of pro-active initiative by the structure. "

As experiments, the activity of the hospital will be gradual and will start from about 400 patients already identified and residing in the territory of reference.
